On Thursday the 23rd of June I attended an arts exhibition called "like you've never been away" in the walker art gallery in Liverpool. It was a photography exhibition by Paul Trevor who came to Liverpool in 1975 to document depriva tion. Focusing mainly in areas such as Everton and Toxteth the photographs give you an idea of how torn and desolate Liverpool was in its post war time. The photographs though don't focus on the landscape of Liverpool they focus on the day to day activities of the people of Liverpool mainly focusing on children and families.
The exhibition itself is on the whole very well laid out with the pictures given an equal amount of space on the wall and a TV in the centre of the room which tells you the background of why Paul Trevor was initially coming to Liverpool and the way that he has returned in awe of how much the area has changed since he last visited and took the photographs back in the 1975. He also talks with people who were in the photos who are now obviously all grown up now. This is why this exhibition is so nice is because whwn you go in you can hear people looking and the photos and smiling because there's someone that they knew or still know today.
Before you even enter the main room of the exhibition there are a couple of pictures (including the first picture between 1st and 2nd paragraph). There is also a written backstory from the photographer again explaining what he was aiming to do etc. There is a slight downside to this though because it could easily be missed as it is in a corner and the fact that once you've read the two signs outside the exhibition there is no more writing for you to look at so you don't really get a very detailed explination as to why Liverpool looked like a wasteland or really any background on the photographer and what work he had done previously to Liverpool.
Overall though this is a fantastic exhibition as you get a glimpse of what life was like in the city and how it has changed since 1975. It's so nice to see as well the day to day activities of people and how they coped by living in this almost war-torn looking Liverpool. This exhibition runs from the 13th of may to the 25th of september. For more information about the exhibition visit http://www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/walker/exhibitions/paultrevor/ .
