4th Review

On Wednesday the 29th of June I visited St. Cuthberts a catholic school in St. Helens. It was a chance to look at the projects that Curious Minds does and how practically they are carried out. The project I went to was a gangster rapping where the students had to create their own raps ( as a group ). They not only created the raps though they created the artwork for the CD and they also made posters which in my view were very impressive. The raps as well were very good as you could tell that they came from their heart expressing their personal beliefs and experiences.

Below is a copy of the lyrics. In total their were two raps.

As you can tell these raps are very impressive and came straight from the heart.

There were two classes that took part in the activity. There were many stages to this project:

  1. First the practitioner James got them thinking about rap and how it is used in modern music.
  2. The students started on their raps probably with a planning session before ( each student made either one or two lines in the raps and groups of around 4 each created a single verse ).
  3. One class worked on the CD art cover when the other was working on the posters. For the CD artwork the students went on the internet and designed the CD artwork. For the posters the other class went out of school to a local park and took pictures of the surroundings and of other members of their class. Here is an example of the posters and the CD artwork

  4. The raps are finished and are recorded in the schools music departmet. A slide show of all the images taken by the students is merged with the recording on DVD.
  5. The raps are finished and ready to perform!
